raphaelle hlimi

Photos: The Block.

At first, Raphaelle Hlimi's 2010 women's collection is a slightly annoying mix of Steve Urkel, Lady Gaga and Rihanna. But the more you look, the more it gets better. It's like a crazy mix that my mom would hate and my crazy grandma would love.

smeared

Photo: T Magazine.

Here is an image from M/MINK Eau de Parfum's "smear campaign," which includes photos by Inez van Lamsweerde and Vinoodh Matadin that have been defaced (literally) with a sort of asymmetrical inkblot design. Kind of cool as an ad, but just don't ask me about the product. I'll probably never buy another perfume other than Chanel Coco Mademoiselle, even if I ever turn out to no longer be an official mademoiselle.

sade

I bought tickets for Sade's first concert in nine years. I'm thrilled, to say the least. Plus, my date is my mom, which makes the most sense since she was the one who introduced me to Diamond Life twenty years ago (read: at birth). This photograph accompanies an inspiring article in the LA Times, in which Sade speaks on being mixed, nixing vegetarianism and the key to band longevity (read here, please!).

zadie

Zadie Smith is one of the few authors I can say I've read all of their novels (Bret Easton Ellis is a close second but I have yet to get my hands on Imperial Bedrooms). Not to say that I don't read much, but you know, writers just have so many books. And Zadie's current novel list is only three books deep. Really though, I like variety. I like to jump around.

It takes a certain kind of woman to change their name -- and at 14 no less (she was born Sadie). With that said, it's no surprise that I collect baby names like someone would collect stamps or shoes or something (See: Macaulay). Naturally then, Zadie is at the top of my list, much to the dismay of my Jewish friends (for them, zadie means grandfather).

Whatever. Zadie is the best in the best of ways.

morning reading

One of the most secretive duos in "celeb fashion designing" do an interview for Dazed. The end result is, well, kind of dull. If you're interested, after that very welcoming introduction, read it here. Just make sure you read more than this today.
