poirier

Another slammin' interview about former Red Bull Music Academy participants: this time, with Montreal's Poirier, who happens to be one of my favourite DJs. He gets me dancing (or should I say grinding) like no other. Click the photo for the interview.

amenta

Here is the first of a small series of interviews I'm doing with past Red Bull Music Academy participants. First up is Toronto-born vocalist Amenta, who was fortunate (and talented) enough to get chosen to get her groove on at 2010's RBMA in Londoneven if she has no idea why. Click photo for the link to the interview.

not a hair out of place

Despite what I may say/write about his ubiquity and monotony, the Sartorialist's hair-focused shots are some of his best.

on rap, race and relatability

My latest piece for my column, Mixed Like Me, published in The Daily: "On rap, race and relatability." Click away.

blogue mode de rue

Lolitta from 'Blogue mode de rue,' a Francophone street style blog, took my photo at Puces Pop 2011, a few weekends ago. I look vicious. Or stunned, as my friend said. Whateves. The outfit's cool and the tank is by Antithesis, my friend's line. Netted long-sleeved shirt given to me by a friend, the same friend behind Antithesis, Lizit's vintage. Headscarf also vintage, and I don't remember the where, how, or whys of that one, but I do know that I always seem to be wearing it. Shoes by Jeffrey Campbell, which I bought along Newbury Street in Boston, on the most pleasant day in February. H&M "jeggings" (Ew. As if I said that word).

puces pop

Here's a little pictorial story of what I did this weekend, told by smartphone (mine, a Blackberry, Lizzie's, an iPhone). Puces Pop, which, in my view was the big coming-out party for Antithesis, was a grand success. Fun, food and fashion. Not trying to sound cheesy, but for real. What else is there? (Kidding, obviously.) Here are a few photos of the process, from the zine to the bags, the tags and our beautiful table draped with Lizzie's curtains.

sartorial sounds

Street Etiquette creates radiant moods. Brilliant ones, really. Their latest video project, "Sartorial Sounds," is set to Andre 3000, and features one of my favourite slam poets (and I'm impartial to slam poetry), Joshua Bennett, who does his thing and then kills his thing, twice over.

Also, this made me think of a conversation I had with my friends over the weekend. No one is ever just one thing anymore. Now, it's: artist/writer/producer/curator(UGH)/rapper/singer/dancer. You get the idea. Really, though? I get it, but it's foreign to me. I would love to be one thing and be terribly good at it. I'm always hesitant to say that I'm a "writer" because really, am I? "Student" seems like a safe title, one with no expectations whatsoever...

of another fashion

Of Another Fashion is "an alternative archive of the not-quite-hidden but too often ignored fashion histories of U.S. women of color," and also, my new favourite Tumblr.

genevieve savard

Yesterday, I spent the day working at Puces Pop, Montreal's largest DIY fair (and part of Pop Montreal), for my girl's clothing brand, Antithesis. There's a lot of sitting around and giggling at craft fairs. At least in our case. I also killed time by spending my not-so-hard-earned cash and bought this Genevieve Savard necklace, made of recycled leather. Took a few one-two pics on Photo Booth before heading off to the library this morning. (Don't judge me.) (Actually, I don't care.) My friends said that the necklace is so me, probably because of its similarity to this piece I bought last month.

art matters

I wrote a little something about Art Matters, Concordia's city-wide fine arts festival. Click to read.

Editor's note: "The Closer We Are to Death, The More We Feel Alive" is one show, but it's listed as two. Also: if you spot the typo at the end, I'll send you a virtual cookie. Just kidding. It's that easy.

girls get busy

The people over at Girls Get Busy, a London-based zine, asked me to do this little survey at the Women in Media, Women in Music panel I went to at Smith College over reading week. My friend and I were given small pieces of paper and our photos were taken on a disposable. I look awkward, but that's no surprise. Click the image if you want to read my rushed answers. And read my dear friend Beth's too, here.

And since this used to be mainly fashion blog, and also because I have a deadline tomorrow that I'm putting off, here are the details on what I was wearing, from the top down:
- vintage leopard-print scarf
- Jenny Bird crest necklace
- cream blouse from Primark
- silk DVF boyfriend blazer
- vintage Levi jeans from the men's section at VV
- vintage high-top Keds in a forest green that you can't really see in the photograph
